The Director is responsible for leading and developing UL’s Building & Life Safety Technology business in Greater China to ensure revenue and profitability with successful long term performance, covering the business and technical aspects of UL’s service offering of safety certification services, testing, advisory and related innovation services, including expansion into new services. Responsible for the overall coordination and development of key business sectors which includes identifying business demand drivers, specific service offerings, setting targets for establishing service offerings, tracking, coaching, and allocating resources to achieve these objectives. Pursues external funding for product development and special research investigations in accordance with the business plan. Responsibilities include ensuring client satisfaction, managing business performance, leading regional growth and competitiveness, interfacing with clients and translating their needs into plans and actions, managing cross-functional teams, and directing innovation to enhance regional leadership.


  • Develop strategy, recommend partnerships, identify acquisition candidates and develop sales plans with local sales leaders. As the sub – industries develop and mature in their regions, concurrently apply operational management skills as director of operations, ensuring quality and throughput measures meet profit & loss as well as revenue targets.  
  • Translate market needs, industry trends and innovation requirements into regional business strategies, growth plans and action plans, and then drive execution, working in conjunction with the global leadership team
  • Set the technical and business direction, including innovation and service level requirements to grow the business and increase market share
  • Accountable for financial results by ensuring the best quality of execution and operating to the highest standard of ethics, in accordance with the UL mission and established commitments
  • Analyze market potential and develop competitive positioning and pricing strategies.
  • Develop new services and concepts for assigned market segment
  • Draft, negotiate and secure contracts for local and multi-national clients
  • Negotiate alliances, partnerships, and business arrangements with future partners to facilitate business expansion.
  • Promote UL’s capabilities and reputation among clients, associations, and end user applications, positioning UL as a growing leader in the region
  • Represent client and business interests in national and professional meetings and conferences
  • Be a member of the global BLST leadership team, and ensure cross-regional collaboration and cooperation
  • Lead, coach and develop a business oriented regional team, spanning multiple locations. Ensure high performing team that embraces both business performance and shared values. This includes hiring, training, coaching and performance management.
  • Ensure compliance with company policies           
  • Other duties as directed


  • University Degree (Equivalent to a U.S. Bachelor’s degree) in business administration or a related discipline plus eight years of related experience. Be able to interact with clients at leadership levels on business and high level technical matters, with significant leadership experience
  • MBA preferred, with strong business acumen and client centric philosophy
  • Business and profit minded with related technical knowhow; competitive and profit-driven; re-invents competitive advantage
  • Demonstrated ability to influence and negotiate skillfully in tough situations with both internal and external groups in order to achieve desired outcomes without damaging relationships
  • Excellent communication, negotiation and interpersonal skills; distinctive ability to interact with all levels of management, clients and suppliers; good proficiency in English
  • Effectively copes with and manages change for the team and organization. Has the ability to decide and act without having the total picture and comfortably handles risk and uncertainty
  • Must be able to develop competencies in technical categories of the industry being managed, have a detailed knowledge of the technical vocabulary common to the appropriate discipline and have a working knowledge of conformity standards in use in areas of expertise
  • Culturally sensitive, a team player who can exhibit strong leadership, and be able to motivate team
  • Applies judgment and acts according to the UL mission and standards of ethics and integrity
